Stream Safety First: How We Keep Our On‑Site Brook Child‑Friendly All Year
If you’re planning a family camping trip, water play often tops the wish list—and so does peace of mind. At Camping Drei Spatzen, stream safety is part of how we shape a relaxed, child-friendly experience. Our small, shallow brook is ideal for splashing, building tiny dams, and clambering over stones. It’s not suitable for swimming, and that clear guidance sets the tone for safe, imaginative play throughout your stay.
Nestled in the village of Utscheid in the Süd Eifel—between Bitburg (Germany) and Vianden (Luxembourg)—our intimate, 58-place family campsite sits among forested hills and a small valley. Families come for the calm, the nature, and the friendly buzz of summer, with plenty of places for kids to explore.
What makes our on-site brook child-friendly
- It’s intentionally play-only. The on-site stream is too small for swimming, but perfect for children to play and clamber. That simple boundary helps everyone focus on low-risk water fun.
- Car-free tent areas by the water. Our car-free Comfort+ tent pitches are located mainly along the brook in the field called "Aan de Beek." With no vehicles permitted on these pitches, families enjoy waterside time without traffic at the tent door.
- A calm setting that supports supervision. The campsite’s layout sits in a small valley near a large forest, creating a natural, contained feel that makes it easier to keep an eye on little explorers.
- Plenty of alternative play zones. Beyond the brook, children can discover two playgrounds, a small soccer field, and a communal fire/BBQ area. On rainy days, head indoors for board games, a pool table, darts, and table football. The variety keeps energy spread across the site and reduces crowding by the water.
- Relaxed, family-forward atmosphere. Peace and quiet dominate in the pre- and post-season. In high season and school holidays, there’s a friendly, summer buzz that still prioritizes balance and calm.

Stream safety essentials for families
Natural water play should be simple, joyful, and safe. Use these stream safety basics to set your family up for carefree fun:
Supervision that works
- Stay within arm’s reach of young children when they’re near the water.
- Set clear boundaries: which stones to climb, how far along the bank they can explore, and a rule for moving together.
- Use a buddy system for older kids so no one wanders out of sight.
Smart gear and clothing
- Choose sturdy, closed-toe water shoes for grip on wet stones and to protect little toes.
- Dress in quick-dry layers; pack a warm top for after water play.
- Bring a small towel and spare socks so kids stay comfortable and focused.
Read the water and terrain
- Teach kids to test footing before stepping. Wet rocks can be slippery; use hands to steady and move slowly.
- After rainfall, small streams can run faster than usual. Keep play in the shallows and along the bank.
- Avoid building large barriers that divert flow; keep dams tiny and temporary.
Hygiene basics
- Remind kids to keep hands away from faces while playing and to wash up before snacks.
- Pack wipes or hand gel for a quick clean-up before heading to the bistro terraces.
Sun, rest, and rotation
- Use sun protection and take water breaks.
- Rotate between the brook, playgrounds, and the small soccer field to keep everyone fresh and focused.

- Agree the boundaries: where to go, which stones or banks to avoid, and a signal to regroup.
- Gear up: closed-toe water shoes, quick-dry layers, hat, and sunscreen.
- Test conditions: check footing, look for slippery rocks, and keep to the shallow edges.
- Supervise: stay within arm’s reach of younger children; use buddy pairs for older kids.
- Pause and rotate: switch to playgrounds or the small soccer field to keep energy and attention high.
- Clean up: wash hands before snacks and leave the brook just as you found it.
Beyond the brook: nature, culture, and easy day trips
From your pitch, step directly onto hiking trails weaving through forests, hills, and rock formations. Cyclists and mountain bikers will find plenty of challenging routes nearby. Fancy a day trip? The well-known Müllerthal region in Luxembourg—often called “Little Switzerland”—is a short drive away and makes an easy outing between relaxed hours by the water.
